Coverages
We will provide a break down of how motorcycle insurance works and what coverage is available.
Liability
Liability is required by law in most states. This is also the only coverage required to be carried in at fault states. If your are deemed at fault in any third party damages, your liability protects you. Some examples are if you rear end someone and you are determined to be at fault. This is the most important part of you auto insurance liability. No matter how much damage is done to any property. Medical bills are very expensive these days, and especially law suits. Limits are available at state minimum requirements, but not recommended. Higher and optional limits include, 50/100, 100/300, 250/500 and 500 combined single limit.
To give a better understanding of what 25/50, 50/100, 100/300 and 500 CSL means please see the following example.
Joe, is looking for an auto insurance policy. He decides that 100/300 would be adequate coverage. This means if he got into an at fault accident, the insurance company will pay up to 100,000 dollars per person, and 300,000 dollars maximum. This pays for medical bills due to the other party, their lost wages, if they sue you in court, and pain and suffering.
Medical Payments Coverage
Medical payments coverage is also know as personal injury protection. This provides coverage for medical bills and losses due to the the at fault party and passengers. This coverage is based on a per person basis. The limits come in a limit order of the following and depending on state laws. For example the Colorado Law minimum is 5,000 per person, unless a waiver is signed. It varies from 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 25,000 per person and some higher limits depending on insurance company and state.
Uninsured and/or Under insured Motorists
Considering that there are a lot of people who don't carry the minimum state requirement for liability insurance, this coverage is a must. You don't want to be responsible for paying for your medical bills, when somebody else was irresponsible and negligent enough not to be carrying insurance. This coverage will pay for your medical payments, lost wages and pain and suffering and for any other passengers in the vehicle. These limits are purchased and work similar to liability limits. You can buy intervals of 25/50, 50/100, 100/300, 250/500 and 500 CSL. This also covers you as a pedestrian walking in most states.
Physical Damage Coverage
Collision
Collision coverage covers any physical damage done to your vehicle, either due to an at fault accident, not at fault accident or uninsured motorists. A deductible is very common on collision coverage. They can be as low as 100 dollars 250, 500, 750, 1000, 2000, 2500 and then 5000. The coverage is usually actual cash value, but certain policies can be endorsed to covered a stated amount or an agreed value. Agreed values most of the time are either collector cars or exotic or high value vehicles.
Comprehensive(other than collision)
Comprehensive covers everything other than what is listed above. Some examples are as follows... hitting an animal, vandalism, weather, riots and theft. This overages is also based on an actual cash value. This coverage can also be endorsed to cover a stated amount or an agreed value.
Towing
Towing provides a set amount of coverage, when your vehicle becomes disabled, either due to mechanical break down or accidents. Charges are usually in dollar amounts of 50, 75, 100 and sometimes up to 150.
Please keep in mind that insurance does not cover maintence. It only covers accidents.
Every state has its own laws and requirements. There are no federal laws requiring auto insurance at this time. Most states require a from of compulsory insurance. State auto insurance laws are broken down into two ways. At fault and no fault. Most states are at fault states. For more information on motor vehicle insurance laws, contact your department of insurance in your state. This can be done by a simple Google search.
